Light Reading: New Plexxi Chief Makes His Mark

As he enters his third month in the big chair, new Plexxi CEO Rich Napolitano is retooling the company’s messaging to focus more on the benefits of software networks — using Plexxi technology, of course — and less on the abstract benefits of SDN. Napolitano took over as CEO in November after 30 years in the technology industry, most recently at EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), where he was president of the Unified Storage Division. (See Plexxi Taps Former EMC Exec as New CEO.) Napolitano’s vision for Plexxi is to communicate that it serves the needs of changing networks. Previously, enterprises and service providers built network infrastructure first. But now, networks need to be flexible to meet the needs of new applications: web-facing, mobile, big data, and hybrid clouds. Application needs come first. That requires software networks, which is where Plexxi comes in, Napolitano says.

CRN: Software-Defined Networking Poised For Its Breakout Year, Solution Providers Say

Many solution providers believe 2015 is the year that software-defined networking will truly begin to reshape the networking landscape. “I think 2015 is probably the start of where SDN is really going to start taking off,” said Chad Williams, vice president of research and education at Matrix Integration, a Jasper, Ind.-based Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems partner. “All in all, it’s going to change the networking landscape over the next couple of years.”

Ask a seasoned network engineer about the “year of the LAN” and you’re likely to get a chuckle and this query in response: “Which one?” Indeed, various pundits insisted regularly in the late 80s that this would be the year that local-area networking would take off. Then it took off and nobody paid any more attention. The same thing is happening now with SDN. As Jim Duffy notes in his end-of-year news wrap-up, it was a year of non-stop action for SDN. Was 2014 the “year of the SDN”? Nah. Will 2015 be? Probably not, even though TechTarget’s Shamus McGillicuddy highlights several intriguing pilots at United Airlines and Cornell University, among others. As history has shown, network technology acceptance is a multi-year process.

Network World: After acquiring Sanbolic to fill storage void, could Citrix target networking next?

This week, Citrix announced it was acquiring Sanbolic, a vendor that provides virtual storage technology for virtual data centers. The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company enables customers to “software define” storage to optimize the delivery of workloads between any types of media. This includes SSD, flash storage, cloud, SAN, and NAS systems, and the aim is to improve application performance and availability, and especially storage utilization. The purchase by Citrix is an interesting one in that it fills a big void in the company’s overall virtualization portfolio. Sanbolic plugs nicely into Citrix’s desktop virtualization suite, and the two have actually been technology partners for years, so the acquisition seems logical.
